Sugar Hill, GA, is located in Gwinnett County, just north of downtown Atlanta, and only a short distance from Lake Lanier and the North Georgia Mountains.
The story of how Sugar Hill gained its name is that a freight wagon traveling from the railroad in Buford to Cumming broke a wheel while climbing a steep hill, spilling its load of sugar all over the hill. The hill came to be known as "the hill where the sugar spilled," then shortened to "the Sugar Hill" and further shortened to Sugar Hill. It became chartered as a city in 1939.
Economic expansion has enhanced Sugar Hill's draw to new residents and industries. The city is served by the acclaimed Gwinnett County Public School System.
Sugar Hill has become a premier community in metro Atlanta, committed to the conservation and emphasis of the natural environment. Along with its country setting, city parks, recreational facilities, and other attractions, Sugar Hill earned the "Community of Pride" designation several years ago, and a reputation of its residents living "the sweet life!"
